According to a Semafor report on October 27, Anthropic warned in its initial public offering (IPO) prospectus that power supply difficulties and rising energy costs could slow the expansion of its AI infrastructure. The company anticipates that already high energy expenditures will increase further. The prospectus states that power procurement negotiations, regulatory approvals, construction delays, and cost overruns could all affect data center construction progress. Meanwhile, AI companies may be required to bear more of the costs of grid upgrades, even if the facilities are not directly used by them. Anthropic specifically disclosed that due to arrangements in some power and infrastructure contracts, the company may still incur related costs even if the expected power supply capacity is delayed or ultimately not delivered. Tight power equipment supply, rising project financing costs, and partner execution risks could further drive up operating expenses. Furthermore, Anthropic warned that rising temperatures and wildfire risks due to climate change could threaten data center infrastructure and increase the electricity and water costs required for server cooling.
