China's UN ambassador Fu Cong told a Security Council open meeting on the Iran nuclear file on 27 that parties should push for a US-Iran ceasefire and talks. Fu blamed the US's unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA and the reinstatement and escalation of unilateral sanctions and 'maximum pressure' for the current impasse. He said the JCPOA and UNSC Resolution 2231 demonstrate political-diplomatic means are the only way to resolve the issue, and that the agreement's core objectives and principles — including step-by-step reciprocity and balanced rights and obligations — must be preserved. Fu added Iran should honor its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and that states must respect Iran's NPT-guaranteed right to peaceful nuclear energy.
