The Information reports OpenAI plans to buy Google AI chips to accelerate
reducing its reliance on Nvidia. If OpenAI purchases Google’s tensor processing
units (TPUs) it would be a significant win for Google’s chip business; financial
terms and scope are unclear. OpenAI is recruiting an engineer to "lead
optimization" of its frontier models to run on TPUs, suggesting work remains at
an early stage. The Information said last year OpenAI had begun using TPUs, a
report that prompted JENSEN HUANG to move quickly and preceded a new
Nvidia‑OpenAI agreement. An OpenAI spokesperson later said the company
"Currently has no plans to use TPUs exclusively."
