Semafor reports President Trump is willing to give diplomacy with Iran another
chance but is considering resuming military strikes shortly after the U.S.
midterm if elections negotiations fail. A U.S. official said the administration
is negotiating a temporary peace agreement but faces significant obstacles.
Trump confirmed Vice President Pence sent a letter to Iran seeking to restart
talks and downplayed the move as mainly humanitarian. The official said U.S.
forces could return to military action “as long as the president gives the
order." Many inside the administration are skeptical; the official added Trump
is the most open to escalation but still has reservations.
