Eurelectric said wholesale power prices have surged to their highest since the
2022 energy crisis and urged the EU to adopt targeted, time-limited measures to
reduce consumer electricity bills. In a letter to EU energy ministers it
recommended removing ‘‘non-energy costs’’ — including grid charges and
environmental levies — from household bills. Several of Europe’s largest power
markets have seen winter wholesale prices double versus last winter, driven
mainly by a spike in gas; gas topped €100/MWh this week, more than twice its
level at the start of the year. Eurelectric warned against subsidizing gas-fired
generation — an option under discussion in Italy — saying it would raise gas
demand just as countries should be cutting consumption.
