Alphabet shares plunged on Thursday and its five-year CDS jumped as much as
5.3bps to 84bps — the largest move since Sept. 21 — after a disappointing
earnings print intensified concern that heavy, debt-funded AI investment may not
deliver expected returns. ICE Data Services shows CDS costs for other
hyperscalers and chipmakers, including Meta and Broadcom, also rose. Barclays
credit-strategy analysis of trade-archive data found year-to-date CDS trading
linked to the top-10 hyperscalers and chipmakers has surged more than eightfold
to $176bn. Some swaps, such as SpaceX-linked contracts, have only begun trading
in recent months; Oracle CDS is the most active. Related 2026 trading volume is
up nearly fivefold YoY to $46.8bn.
