Oct 30 — China Coast Guard conducted law-enforcement patrols in the territorial
sea and adjacent waters of Huangyan Island (Scarborough Shoal), which the coast
guard described as a necessary countermeasure to Philippine infringements and
provocations. Since early October the coast guard has stepped up patrols in the
area, lawfully handling illegally intruding vessels and tightening control of
the waters to safeguard China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
