Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission said since the start of the
fiscal year (Apr 2026–Mar 2027) roughly 260 million personal records have been
leaked, about twice Japan’s population. From Apr 1 to Oct 16, 2,094
illegal-access incidents were reported, resulting in about 260 million records
exposed; six incidents each involved more than 10 million records.
