The latest grain transportation report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service on October 29 showed that, for the week ending October 28, the U.S. grain transportation truck cost index rose to 240, while the barge transportation index fell to 224. This marks the first time since the end of August that the truck index has surpassed the barge index. Previously, the barge index rose to approximately 275 in mid-September before declining steadily, while the truck index remained around 240. During the same period, the national average diesel price rose to $6.352 per gallon, up 7.6 cents from the previous week and $2.634 higher than the same period last year. This divergence in transportation cost indicators reflects a slight easing of cost pressures during the peak season for barge transportation, while land transportation continues to face high fuel costs. Changes in the cost of grain transportation methods in the U.S. Midwest may affect logistical expenses for transporting agricultural products from production areas to export ports and the purchasing basis for grain traders.
