On Oct. 30 Canada’s federal government designated Vancouver’s Roberts Bank
Terminal 2 a national interest project to raise port throughput, diversify trade
and cut reliance on U.S. exports. Transport Canada said the CAD5.9 bln (about
USD4.2 bln) project would lift Vancouver’s container capacity by roughly 50%,
adding ~2.4 mln TEU and supporting up to CAD100 bln of annual trade. The
design aims to provide regulatory certainty and could accelerate commercial
operations to 2035—up to four years earlier than previously planned—supporting a
government target to double exports to non-U.S. markets by 2035.
