South Korea’s THE ELEC reports Samsung Electronics has confirmed it will fully exit 8-inch (200mm) chip foundry operations and has notified customers it plans to cease related production lines by end-2030. Samsung previously said it would gradually scale back 8-inch manufacturing; this is the first explicit termination timetable. Industry sources say Samsung will consolidate 8-inch operations and redeploy personnel and equipment toward 12-inch (300mm) wafer microfabrication and concentrate investment there. South Korean fabless semiconductor firms that relied on Samsung’s 8-inch capacity are reportedly scrambling to find alternative production sites.
