A recent UBS research report points out that AI investment is entering a second phase that relies more heavily on capital strength. Balance sheet flexibility, operating cash flow, and low-cost financing capabilities will become key factors in differentiating the performance of companies across the AI industry chain. As infrastructure construction continues to expand, the market is paying closer attention to the cost, financing structure, and availability of funds for companies raising capital for the next round of AI investment.
UBS believes that large cloud computing companies with ample cash reserves, such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet, can sustain capital expenditures through strong operating cash flow, giving them a relative advantage when the financing environment tightens. In contrast, highly leveraged AI infrastructure operators and emerging cloud service providers are more vulnerable to widening credit spreads, debt refinancing pressures, and changes in computing power utilization. Delays in power grid connection, rising financing costs, or lower-than-expected equipment utilization could all impact the profitability and revenue realization time of related projects.
