The Democrats won a landslide victory in the midterm elections and regained control of Congress, while the Republicans suffered a major setback. Markets believe the main reason for the Republican defeat is Trump's initiation of the third Gulf War with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, which drove up oil prices and caused the cost of living in the US to soar, placing heavy pressure on ordinary people. Trump threatened to become "Mr. Veto" if the Republicans lost control of Congress. Analyst Andrew Korybko points out that this move is not difficult to understand, because if the Democrats do not obtain the two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate needed to override a presidential veto, the US could be locked in a legislative deadlock for the next two years, making it difficult for the Democrats to remove Trump even if they attempt impeachment again. If domestic policy becomes deadlocked, Trump may shift his focus to foreign affairs, with the Iran issue becoming crucial. However, just as the Democrats must compromise to push through legislation, Trump must also compromise with Iran to preserve his political legacy. The fact that some Republican voters abandoned their votes or switched to the Democrats is not a sign of "abandoning" Trump, but rather an expression of dissatisfaction with the war's impact on the cost of living, with many believing the war could have been avoided. Compared to foreign policy or the so-called "culture war," voters are clearly more concerned about economic issues. If the 2028 election results in a Democratic president and Democratic control of Congress, all of Trump's achievements both domestically and internationally during his second term will be lost. If Trump continues to mired in wars, or even triggers retaliatory attacks from Iran that destroy regional energy infrastructure, the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement may very well be relegated to the dustbin of history.
