India will require power distribution companies to procure specified batteries
energy storage capacity alongside renewable generation, Power Ministry Secretary
Pankaj Agarwal said Thursday. Details, including the storage capacity
obligation, are under discussion and expected to be finalized by March next
year. The mandatory pairing aims to reduce renewable curtailment by storing
surplus daytime solar and variable wind output for release during tight supply
and to accelerate battery storage investment; without sufficient storage, grid
operators may be forced to curtail renewable generation.
