Following the Democratic Party's victory in Congress, Israeli opposition politicians accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of undermining US support for Israel and pledged to "strengthen bipartisan relations" should the opposition form the next government. The Democrats' victory in both the Senate and the House of Representatives dealt a significant blow to President Trump. Deep public discontent over the US-Israel war against Iran also contributed to the Democratic victory. This US election came just one week after the Israeli general election. In the Israeli election, Netanyahu's right-wing ruling coalition lost its parliamentary majority, but its performance was still sufficient to prevent his main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, from smoothly succeeding him as prime minister. Former Prime Minister Yair Lapid's party is a member of the coalition seeking to oust Netanyahu. Lapid stated on Wednesday that the US election results indicate that "Israel cannot afford" Netanyahu continuing in power. Lapid wrote on social media: "This would jeopardize our security, damage our democracy, and destroy our position on the international stage."
