Goldman Sachs' latest European strategy report points out a significant divergence between the earnings of European listed companies and domestic economic growth. The bank projects that the Stoxx 600 index's earnings per share (EPS) will grow by 18% in 2026, while the Eurozone's nominal GDP will only grow by 3.3%. Goldman Sachs believes this gap stems primarily from the mismatch between the industry structure of the stock market and the real economy; European stock markets are more concentrated in sectors with higher profitability and greater globalization. In terms of industry weighting, the financial sector accounts for only 10% of Eurozone economic activity but contributes 33% of the Stoxx index's earnings; the energy sector has almost zero direct weight in the economy but contributes 9% of earnings; and the technology sector accounts for 4% of economic activity, corresponding to 11% of earnings. Conversely, industry, real estate, and retail combined account for approximately 45% of Eurozone economic activity but only 15% of listed company earnings. Goldman Sachs therefore describes the European stock market as a "distorted mirror" of the real economy. Goldman Sachs believes this structure means that simply using domestic GDP to judge the earnings of European companies easily underestimates the resilience of listed companies. European stock market earnings are more heavily reliant on the financial, energy, and technology sectors, which are more susceptible to interest rates, commodity prices, and global demand. For investors, assessing European earnings prospects requires considering sector weightings, global revenue sources, and the external macroeconomic environment.
