California Democrat Robert Garcia, expected to lead the House Oversight
Committee in the next Congress, said he will investigate new White House chief
of staff Stephen Miller’s role in the Trump administration’s large-scale
deportation raids. Garcia called Miller a principal architect of allegedly
unconstitutional ICE operations that he says caused community panic and resulted
in kidnappings and deaths, and warned Miller to prepare for possible legal
scrutiny. Garcia said the move means Miller could face a Democratic-led
congressional investigation after assuming the White House chief of staff post.
