Researchers at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, with collaborators using the newly completed High Intensity Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) have produced and identified the rare nucleus hafnium-153. This is the facility’s first physics result during commissioning and demonstrates HIAF’s capability to explore unknown nuclides and extend the nuclide chart.
