After late‑August talks collapsed and the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on hundreds
of Canadian goods, Canada announced equivalent reciprocal countermeasures. A
poll published Aug. 5 found about 85% support the government's rejection of U.S.
terms, 12.2% oppose; roughly 80% back retaliatory measures — the highest on
record — and 74% say they do not regard the U.S. as a trustworthy ally.
