U.S. electric-vehicle electricity demand growth slowed to at least a three-year low, the EIA said Wednesday. Electricity use for light-duty EVs rose 8% YoY in 1H 2026, down from recent gains of 13–24% and a 24% peak in H2 2023. New EV sales in 1H 2026 fell 19% versus the prior six months; federal tax credits that had reduced purchase and lease costs expired in September 2025. Automakers including Ford and Honda have cut poorly selling EV models since late 2025. Despite the slowdown, light-duty EV electricity consumption has more than doubled since 2023 and reached about 14 billion kWh in 1H 2026.
