Algeria's parliament said on the 25th both chambers approved a presidential
notice authorising deployment of Algerian forces to Niger — the country's first
overseas military deployment since the 1973 Middle East war. The Council of the
Nation (upper house) and the National People's Assembly (lower house) voted in
closed sessions after President Tebboune submitted the notice. Earlier this
month Algeria and Niger signed a military cooperation protocol during a visit by
Niger's defence minister to Algiers to strengthen bilateral military and
security ties.
