Indian officials said US midterm election results on Tuesday should relieve some
trade pressure on New Delhi by strengthening Congressional oversight and
limiting the president’s unilateral authority to impose reciprocal tariffs, but
would introduce new uncertainty into already fragile bilateral ties. Officials
noted Democrats won decisive victories in both chambers, signaling stronger
checks on Trump-era tariff policy and Iran-related actions that had earlier hit
Indian exporters and energy imports. They said the outcome could give India
breathing room in trade negotiations and reduce pressure to accept terms New
Delhi views as unfavorable. The US is India’s largest export market; India is a
major importer of Middle East oil.
