At a Nov 5 regular briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said
Japan’s expedited revision of three security documents sharply raises defense
outlays—doubling spending—and develops offensive capabilities, a clear
acceleration of remilitarization. Guo called Tokyo’s claim of responding to the
“greatest strategic challenge” a pretext for military expansion and said there
is domestic concern in Japan that its pacifist identity is being eroded and that
the shift will hurt the economy and livelihoods. He said Japan’s move breaks its
“exclusively defensive” posture, seriously threatens regional peace and the
postwar international order, and that the international community must be highly
vigilant and jointly restrain it.
