G7 said it supports and is willing to help implement the US–Iran agreement and
reaffirmed freedom of navigation and duty-free passage as pillars of
international trade. It endorsed a France- and UK-led defensive initiative to
protect merchant shipping, reassure shipping firms and assist clearance of sea
mines to restore traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The group called for a
strong, comprehensive diplomatic follow-up to the memorandum of understanding
reached by President Trump, saying negotiations must address Iran’s regional
threats and ensure it never obtains nuclear weapons; talks should include active
involvement from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other
regional and international partners. G7 committed to accelerate diversification
of energy supply routes and increase strategic stocks to cut global reliance on
the Strait of Hormuz, and welcomed Canada’s pledge to add significant export
capacity to global markets in coming years.
