New York mayor Mamdani said in a Saturday interview that if Israeli Prime
Minister Netanyahu travels to New York to attend the UN General Assembly in
September, he believes Netanyahu should be arrested on alleged war crimes. The
International Criminal Court has previously charged Netanyahu with alleged war
crimes and crimes against humanity over Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. I
think Netanyahu should appear in The Hague, he said, adding I will follow
current New York law, a comment the mayor said indicates he will not proactively
move to enforce prior threats of arrest. The ICC has no jurisdiction in the
United States and U.S. federal law bars local governments from cooperating with
the court.
