The Washington Post, citing eight people including officials, says the Pentagon
is reassessing its Middle East military posture, indicating the Iran war could
reshape the US footprint in the region. Two people familiar with the analysis
said a central question is whether to withdraw forces from the Persian Gulf. US
overseas bases in the region have been damaged by Iranian strikes for months,
and that damage has given the Pentagon an opportunity to reconsider its posture.
The Pentagon has said it may not rebuild some bases to their pre-war
configurations. Officials said Hegseth has not ordered a formal review; the work
is described as prudent planning that could inform decisions on whether to
rebuild war-damaged facilities.
