The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday issued a temporary administrative stay of
lower-court injunctions, allowing President Trump to continue construction of an
approximately 90,000 sq ft White House banquet hall while justices consider his
emergency appeal. Without the stay the lower-court bans would have taken effect
Saturday. Two lower courts had ruled Trump’s demolition of the White House East
Wing and the start of construction exceeded presidential authority; the
demolition occurred last fall and the project began without congressional
approval. Trump has said the project is necessary for national security.
