Argentina’s defense minister Carlos Presti said on Sept. 12 the government plans to establish a naval base in Ushuaia, the country’s southernmost city near the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands. He said construction will begin on Jan. 2 after a public tender. The base, to be operated by the Argentine navy, will host submarines, marines and naval aviation and will serve as a logistics hub linking Argentina’s seven permanent and six temporary Antarctic bases; Presti said it holds strategic value for Argentina’s positioning and projection in the South Atlantic.
