Irish Data Protection Commission said on Monday it has fined Alphabet’s Google €403 million ($463 million) for improperly processing location data in web and app activity and location histories. The penalty followed complaints from multiple European consumer groups. Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle said Google’s breaches meant users may not have known their location data was being used to influence them via advertising or to infer interests, eroding control over personal data. The fine is the fourth-largest issued under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation; in 2023 the regulator fined Meta Platforms €1.2 billion for transfers of EU personal data to the United States.
