Ukrainian drones struck one of Russia’s largest data centres in Balakovo, Saratov region on the Volga, a facility operated by Sberbank. Sberbank executives said the attack did not interrupt the bank’s operations. The centre, located near the Balakovo nuclear power plant and the Saratov hydro station, was reported by RIA in 2024 to cover about 55,000 sqm and to be slated to host one of Russia’s largest supercomputers by 2027. Yandex-owned data centres were hit three times last week; Ukraine says such strikes are retaliatory. Yandex and Sberbank have not disclosed whether supercomputer equipment was damaged.

Italian Prime Minister Meloni said Rome is close to an EU-approved mechanism to cap or lower gas prices used for power generation. The measure is intended to ease energy cost pressure and reduce household electricity bills ahead of next year’s national election. She described technical talks as tense but constructive and said, if agreed, Italy would implement steps to limit the impact of gas-for-power prices on overall power tariffs. The government is also considering using additional VAT receipts from higher fuel prices to aid households hit by the energy crisis.
