Italian Prime Minister Meloni said Rome is close to an EU-approved mechanism to
cap or lower gas prices used for power generation. The measure is intended to
ease energy cost pressure and reduce household electricity bills ahead of next
year’s national election. She described technical talks as tense but
constructive and said, if agreed, Italy would implement steps to limit the
impact of gas-for-power prices on overall power tariffs. The government is also
considering using additional VAT receipts from higher fuel prices to aid
households hit by the energy crisis.
