China Coast Guard spokesman Jiang Lue said on June 1 the Daishan flotilla
conducted law-enforcement patrols in waters east of Taiwan. He called the
patrols a necessary response to Japan and the Philippines’ unilateral
announcement to launch delimitation talks in those waters, saying such moves
seriously infringe China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights. Jiang
urged Tokyo and Manila to immediately cease what he described as illegal
actions; the China Coast Guard said it will continue to strengthen control of
the area to defend national territory and maritime interests.
