Statistics Canada said Canada’s goods trade surplus widened to CAD 42.4 bln (about USD 29.8 bln) in May, the largest in four years and the fourth consecutive monthly increase, up from a revised CAD 34.1 bln in April. Exports to the U.S. rose 1.5% to CAD 53.72 bln, the highest since February last year, lifting U.S. share of total exports to roughly 70%; imports from the U.S. fell 1.4%. Canada’s trade surplus with the U.S. widened to CAD 11.6 bln in May from CAD 10.3 bln in April, the biggest surplus since the January 2025 record. Export gains were led by metal ores and non-metallic minerals, up 16.1%, largely reflecting shifts in sulfur shipments after volumes routed through the Strait of Hormuz declined following the outbreak of the Middle East conflict.
