A U.S. judge on Thursday enjoined the Pentagon from blacklisting Anthropic,
developer of the Claude AI, after Anthropic sued in federal court in California
alleging Defense Secretary Hegseth exceeded his authority by naming the firm a
national-security supply-chain risk. The designation, under rules that allow the
government to flag companies that could expose military systems to infiltration
or sabotage, had barred Anthropic from certain defense contracts. Anthropic has
refused military use of Claude for U.S. surveillance or autonomous-weapon
development; executives warned the designation could cost the company billions
and damage its reputation. This is the latest development in a high-stakes
dispute with the U.S. military over battlefield AI safety.
