Prime Minister Burnham has abandoned two green levies pushed by former PM Starmer, indefinitely shelving plans to bring waste incineration facilities and domestic ports into the UK emissions trading scheme (ETS). The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said the ETS expansion will be suspended indefinitely, and the Department for Transport said plans to charge ports for at‑berth emissions under the ETS are also dropped. Officials cited growing government concern that regulatory costs are adding to consumer prices and worsening household living standards. Officials now plan to levy a carbon emissions tax on shipping firms instead of port‑level ETS charges.
