Tibetan regional government press briefing: an emergency team from the Chinese
Academy of Sciences’ Chengdu Institute, using remote sensing and field surveys,
concluded that at about 10:52 a.m. Beijing time on Aug. 26 a glacier on the
southern slope of a peak in Nepal ruptured at ~5,200m, triggering an ice‑rock
collapsed that fell to ~4,000m, scoured the slope and produced a giant debris
flow. The flow traveled roughly 22km and reached the Jilong (Gyirong) border
port at about 1,800m, flattening ~0.7 sq km and destroying 27 buildings and
associated facilities.
