On Sept. 4 Uruguay declared a national sanitary emergency after highly
Pathogenic H5 avian influenza was found in backyard poultry in Colonia province.
The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries said measures will restrict
movement of backyard birds and poultry not in the official monitoring system,
require backyard and free‑range flocks to be housed in covered, enclosed
facilities, and suspend poultry markets, auctions and exhibitions nationwide.
