Anthropic stated on its official engineering blog on Wednesday (Beijing time) that with the rapid improvement of its AI programming capabilities, the number of daily merged code changes has increased from approximately 2,500 in May to over 30,000 in September, a more than tenfold increase in four months. The company claims that writing code is no longer a bottleneck in development; Claude can autonomously iterate experiments, optimize programs, and even build new services from scratch. What truly slows progress is the code management, compilation, and testing system designed at human development speeds. The company expects the growth in code output to continue in the short term, as the demand for writing code has virtually no upper limit; each time a bottleneck is eliminated, output will surge again. The explosive increase in code volume has overwhelmed the industry-standard Git system: the company's main branch history is approaching 100GB, and automated tests pull code approximately 25 million times daily, generating over 600PB of data traffic daily under normal circumstances. To address this, a seven-person team, leveraging Claude, developed a new system, Scion, in five months and completed the migration. The engineers involved in the development believe that Claude's coding capabilities have surpassed their own, but the architecture and design trade-offs are still overseen by humans. Anthropic anticipates that more companies will face similar pressures in the next 6 to 12 months.
