According to reports from the Yomiuri Shimbun and other media outlets on the 20th, the Japanese government is considering investing an additional 250 billion yen in Rapidus, a semiconductor foundry it is heavily supporting, to enhance Japan's competitiveness in the semiconductor foundry sector. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry stated that it is studying the additional investment plan, intending to invest 150 billion yen in 2028 and another 100 billion yen in 2029, totaling 250 billion yen. The Japanese government has already invested 250 billion yen in Rapidus and plans to invest an additional 150 billion yen in the next fiscal year. If this additional investment plan is ultimately implemented, the government's total investment will increase to 650 billion yen. The Japanese government is heavily supporting Rapidus with the goal of achieving next-generation semiconductor production in Japan. Rapidus plans to begin producing advanced chips with a linewidth of 2 nanometers at its factory in Chitose, Hokkaido, starting next year, and is considering an initial public offering (IPO) in 2031.
