US job openings unexpectedly rose by 333,000 to 7.52 million in September, a
four-month high and above the revised August 7.19 million and economists'
forecasts, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Tuesday. Layoffs fell to
their lowest level since March 2025, while quits rose; the monthly quits rate
climbed to 2.1%, the highest in over a year. The rise in openings and hiring is
a positive sign for labor demand but will need to persist for several months to
confirm a sustained acceleration. The report suggests firms may be regaining
confidence as growth picks up and consumer spending remains resilient.
