State Street's latest risk positioning indicator shows that institutional investors increased their equity asset allocation by approximately 142 basis points in July, fully recovering from the slight decline in June, pushing the month-end equity allocation to a relatively high level of 58%. Meanwhile, fixed income (excluding short-term Treasury bills) allocation remained at 26%, while cash holdings narrowed to 16%. Looking at the long-term historical timeline (chart data dating back to around 2006), the current 58% equity allocation is not only significantly higher than the long-term average (around 51%-52%), but also close to the cyclical highs of the past two decades. This indicates that despite the macroeconomic environment facing fluctuations due to sticky inflation and the fluctuating path of interest rate cuts, large institutional investors' risk appetite has not contracted; instead, they have shown an aggressive stance of continuously increasing their equity asset holdings. This change reflects a shift in institutional pricing logic: the market is gradually digesting the reality of "higher interest rates for longer," and is instead trading on the resilience of corporate earnings and growth expectations for specific sectors. However, when equity allocations are at historically high levels and cash holdings have fallen to a relatively low level, the safety margin for institutions at the portfolio level is also narrowing. If subsequent economic data shows unexpected weakness or liquidity tightens marginally, equity assets held at high levels may face greater volatility risks and passive rebalancing pressures.
